FEST OF DUTY - 2014, Documentary, 60 minutes

Director: Firouzeh Khosrovani

Editor: Shirin Barghnavard

Producer: Firouzeh Khosrovani

Synopsis

In a packed hall of chattering Iranian schoolgirls in lilac robes and white hijabs, an imam explains that at nine years old, they have reached the "age of duty," marking the beginning of puberty and its religious obligations. This ceremony was recorded in 2005. Eight years later, filmmaker Firouzeh Khosrovani revisits two of the children she filmed: cousins and former best friends Melika and Maryam. In their intimate surroundings, the young women discuss their past, present, and future. Maryam wears her hijab with conviction and shares her existential doubts with God, while Melika dreams of becoming an actress, paints her nails, and posts selfies on Instagram.
